[p]Common name or synonym: L-001,L-022, Gold Nugget Gibbiceps, Gold nugget sailfin pleco. Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus (the genus has recently been changed and most searches will yield better results under the old genus Glyptoperichthys)
[p]Origin: Brazil, Rio Tocantins
Water Requirements: Ph 6.5-7.8, GH 5-15, 75-83 deg
[p]Diet Requirements: Omnivore Lots of veggies, wood to chew on and occasional meaty foods such as shrimp. Will eat most things and lots of them.
[p]Sexing: Hard, in mature fish the genital papillae protrudes on males but lies flat on females.
[p]Breeding: As with P gibbiceps it is common in ponds in warmer climates where the fish tunnel into the mud banks (in nature it is the riverbanks). It would be difficult to achieve in the aquarium and an extremely large tank would be needed.
[p]General Information: The L-001/022 is of the same genus as the common sailfin pleco and similar in care and behavior.
It is a relatively fast growing fish and will eat most dry, frozen and fresh foods along with wood and algae which it does a bang-up job on cleaning. Because it reaches a large size it is well suited for a CA/SA cichlid community and is both durable and can hold it’s own. It will defend itself against both cichlids and other bottom living fish. In fights the beautiful dorsal sail fin may get shredded but usually heals within a few days.
It is important to have wood and caves for this fish and a good filtration system along with good water changes as they eat a lot of food hence a lot of waste.
Most of the sailfin plecos are one of the most durable plecos to use for cleanup in a large cichlid community as they can hold their own quite well and are also less shy then most plecos. Handing feeding is often possible.
